1996-Zimbabwe
Habitat for Humanity begins building in Nyamakate, a resettlement area for subsistence farmers, located north of Harare.

1996-Botswana
Thirty-five international bikers with five support staff, cycle 600 miles from Gaborone to Kasane as participants of the Habitat Botswana Bike and Build. The trip takes 17 days and at the end of the road, the bikers, who had been joined by 15 local cyclists along the way, help construct 15 houses in Francistown HFH and Kasane HFH.

1996-Republic of South Africa
A new constitution is adopted, officially completing the transition from apartheid to democracy.

1997-Malawi
Habitat for Humanity Malawi builds its 4,000th house.

1997-Zambia
A coup attempt against Chiluba fails, and Kenneth Kuanda, along with 90 soldiers and civilians, is detained.

1998-Botswana
U.S. President Bill Clinton visits Habitat's affiliate in Kasane.

1998-Republic of South Africa
Habitat for Humanity South Africa builds 25 houses in partnership with Coca-Cola. An accelerated build in Piesang River, a black township in the Durban area, brings people of different races and socioeconomic groups together to complete five of the houses.
