André Kolingba becomes president of the Central African Republic after a coup.

1981-Ghana
Jerry Rawlings assumes position as head of state after a military takeover by the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council.

1983-Nigeria
A military coup, headed by Gen. Mohammed Buhari, overthrows President Shagari.

1985-Nigeria
Gen. Ibrahim Babangida leads a military coup and seizes power, lifting the ban on political parties.

1987-Burundi
A coup, led by Maj. Pierre Buyoga, topples Bagaza. Attempts are again made to reduce tribal tensions in Burundi.

1987-Burundi
Habitat for Humanity begins working in the community of Gitega.

1987-Central African Republic
Upon returning to C.A.R., Bokassa is convicted of treason, murder and cannibalism. He is sentenced to death, but his sentence is commuted to a life sentence.

1987-Ghana
Habitat for Humanity begins work in the central region of Ghana with the establishment of Assinman HFH.

1988-Burundi
Approximately 14,000 people are massacred in renewed tribal violence.

1988
Habitat for Humanity International establishes the Global Village program.

1989-Nigeria
A Habitat affiliate is approved and international partners are sent to work with the local community.

1989-Zaire
Habitat for Humanity Zaire builds its 1,000th house.
