SA Youth Build to serve 45 families
While soccer fans will be streaming to South Africa in June, Habitat for Humanity South Africa is planning to join with thousands of volunteers from across Gauteng, Western Cape & KwaZulu-Natal who will participate in a five day, 45 house blitz build.
The challenge will provide opportunities for corporate funders and mentors, youth from both advantaged and disadvantaged backgrounds to practically assist in the construction of 45 houses during the five day event which will take place from 7 to 11 June in the lead-up to the World Cup.
The youth sector forms a large part of South Africa’s current population and the largest part of South Africa’s unemployed population. Youth between the ages of 14 and 35 constitute 39% of the total South African population, but the youth sector comprises 70% of the unemployed. One-third of all youth live in poverty with the highest rates of the poor and ultra-poor found in the 18 to 24-year-old age bracket.
Habitat for Humanity South Africa is still looking for funding partners for the houses as well as the funds to host the event.
