AmeriCorps VISTA member benefits
AmeriCorps VISTA members may be eligible for the following benefits*:
- Living allowance
The monthly living allowance is determined by the service location. The range for the living allowance is currently $858 to $1,326 monthly. The living allowance is subject to change.
- Education award or Stipend
A $5,550 Education Award or end-of-service stipend of $1,500 will be issued upon successful completion of service. The Segal Education Award is good for seven years from the completion of service and can be used to repay qualified student loans or for future education at eligible schools. VISTA members are not eligible to transfer their education award.
- Student loan forbearance
AmeriCorps members may be eligible to postpone the repayment of their qualified student loans through loan forbearance. While the loan is in forbearance during the term of service, interest continues to accrue. Accrued interest on qualified loans is eligible for payment by the National Service Trust. Please check out the AmeriCorps website for additional details. Please note not all loans are qualified for forbearance.
- Health benefits
Members are eligible to enroll in a limited health plan.
- Personal and sick days
AmeriCorps members can receive childcare benefits if they meet the eligibility requirements.
- Non-competitive hiring status
When AmeriCorps VISTA members satisfactorily complete one full year of service, they earn non‐competitive eligibility for federal government jobs for one year after the member’s service.
