JAKARTA, 27 February 2012: Eleven-year-old Kyla Christie Hambali was moved to do something after the October 2010 disasters which struck Mentawai islands and the Mount Merapi region in her home country of Indonesia.

Her mother, Maris Stella Sutisna, told her to stop mourning and start helping, according to an interview in The Jakarta Post. Kyla obeyed and Sing To Build was born in December 2010. By February 2011, she had sung at 10 such events held at shopping malls across Jakarta, in schools and corporate and hotel functions. Kyla also lent her voice to HFH Indonesia’s A Night of Hope held at JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta in January 2011.

Kyla raised nearly 120 million rupiah (over US$113,000) for HFH Indonesia’s reconstruction in Mentawai and Merapi. She is continuing with Sing To Build given the success of her maiden effort.

“What is unique about Kyla’s performance? At her tender age of 10, she is able to demonstrate the maturity of thought, emotion and voice. Kyla has the heart of compassion for the poor. She expresses her concern in songs with deep expression of emotion; and her child-like stature resonates the voice of the mature. She sings on behalf of the poor,” said Wong Kim Kong, founding principal consultant of Leadership Transformation Academy which trains pastors and leaders.

HFH Great Britain has an international online donation facility for Sing to Build as well as video clips of Kyla’s singing on its website.
