What are you doing this summer?
Join the third Blue Sky Build in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, to help 15 families build energy-efficient homes from June 29 to July 6.
ULAANBAATAR (February 7, 2014) — Summer is still some time away but it is never too early to make plans for a Habitat build. The Land of the Blue Sky beckons with a special build by Habitat for Humanity Mongolia. The third Blue Sky Build will be held from June 29 to July 6 in the capital Ulaanbaatar. International volunteers will join Habitat families to build 15 energy-efficient homes.
The week-long special build will assist families who are currently living in traditional “ger” tents or ramshackle wooden huts or costly but poorly built rented dwellings. These families face overcrowded and unhygienic conditions, and lack proper heating, water and sanitation infrastructure.
The houses which will be constructed during Blue Sky Build 2014 are each about 32 square meters in size, with a living room, a bedroom, a kitchen and a toilet outside the house. Each family will have a small plot of land outside the house to start a home garden.
The houses to be built will have double glazed windows and expanded polysterene insulated sheets. Fiber glass wool will also be used on the ceiling and the walls will be made of polystyrene blocks. All these help to ensure that the houses conserve heat efficiently.
Installing an energy-efficient stove that uses less fuel to keep the house warm for longer periods will reduce expenses on solid fuel by 50 percent and improve in-home air quality. These energy-efficient features will provide families with more disposable income which then can be used for food, education, medicine and other family needs.
The previous Blue Sky Builds, held in 2010 and 2012 respectively, saw a total of more than 240 international volunteers building 48 homes with families and local volunteers.
Holly Van Dyk, a retired nurse who volunteered in the 2012 build, said: “This is what I came here for and it didn’t disappoint.” Do not take Holly’s word for it. Sign up for the build through the Habitat program in your country or email email@example.com
Habitat for Humanity was set up in Mongolia in 1999 with housing programs in Ulaanbaatar, Darkhan, Erdenet and Khangai as well as in Bulgan and Khentii provinces. To date, HFH Mongolia has helped 2,000 families to build, renovate or repair their homes through housing finance services. For more information, visit HFH Mongolia’s website or like its Facebook page.
