![]() "Social Butterfly" Lifts Crew at EMB Site AMERICUS, Georgia (April 2, 1999) -- Vikki Ho-Shing is a volunteer at House No. 8 working with soon-to-be homeowners Brenda and Nathan Poole during this year's Easter Morning Build. The 26-year-old Atlanta, Ga., resident is in Americus hammering away with Habitat for Humanity for the first time. "I'm so glad to see so many people from so many walks of life come together to make a difference in the lives of so many families," said Ho-Shing. Considered the "social butterfly" by many on her house crew, Ho-Shing says she is just enjoying the variety of personalities and talents that surround her. "There are people here with such interesting personalities and backgrounds" she said. "Together, they have all made this a memorable experience for me." When she isn't facilitating self-help groups, a favorite pastime of hers, Ho-Shing is the service learning and leadership development coordinator for Hands on Atlanta, where she encourages others to get involved in the national service organization geared toward affecting change in communities through volunteer programs. "I wish more people everywhere would get involved in a volunteer program," said Ho-Shing. "The diverse audiences that volunteering creates can help break down some of the barriers we experience in the world today." Since arriving in Americus last Friday, Ho-Shing has tackled everything from Sheetrock, sanding, roofing and recycling. "There is no job too small," she said. "There is something for everyone to do." The Poole family is excited about having Ho-Shing working on their house and want to continue the relationship they have established with her. "She is the kind of person everyone can be around," said Mr. Poole. Mrs. Poole plans on exchanging contact information with Ho-Shing so that she can be in touch with her even after the building has ended. "I am happy for the Pooles," said Ho-Shing. "Working on this house has told a story I will never forget." Return to Friday's 1999 EMB Report Home | Get Involved | Where We Build | How It Works | True Stories
