Rain Too Late to Douse Build

AMERICUS, Georgia (April 1, 1999) -- Even Wednesday's downpour could not wash away plans for a successful Easter Morning Build. And although the resulting mud left things a little messy, house construction continued on cue.

Thanks to a blitz build that's remained on schedule, according to Johnny Roberts, EMB 1999's construction manager, much of the construction work Wednesday was being done inside the homes, thus eliminating any significant threat to EMB progress.

"The build's in pretty good shape," Roberts said, "and with a lot of people getting ready to paint, the rain will not be too much of a hindrance."

If rain would have come a day or two earlier, however, it could have caused more trouble for volunteers, homeowners and EMB houses.

During the first of the week, roofs and walls would have been open, exposing the houses' interior to potentially damaging water. Drywall and other construction materials would have been exposed as well and could have suffered in the rain.

Fortunately, Mother Nature has cooperated for the most part. She will provide a partial cloud cover the remainder of the week with high temperatures reaching the mid-80s. Lows will dip to around 60 degrees -- and no rain is predicted.
