Mid-Coast Habitat is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.

Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - "sweat equity" - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.

Founded in 1990
News
In March of this year we completed our 16th home for Gene and Leila Winchenbach and their three children, Thomas, Owen and Amber. It is located on Booker Street in Thomaston.
Founded in 1990 this is the 15th year of our affiliate's existence! Construction of our 17th home will commence this fall and we will kick off our 2005 Capital Campaign shortly. Our goal is to raise $60,000. The majority of these moneys will be used to build our next home with a small portion going toward a fund to acquire sites for the future development of homes in our area.
We are pleased to announce our first major gift in the amount of $4,500 toward our 2005 Capital Campaign and wish to thank the Maine Association of Realtors Foundation for its continued generosity and support.
Get Involved
While volunteers help us substantially reduce the cost of building a home, the need for money never goes away. We need funds to purchase bilding materials, land, and services that we don't have the tools or expertise to provide. Gifts of land, construction materials and services can be equally valuable because they allow us to use the cash we are able to raise more efficiently.
VOLUNTEER:All the work of Mid-Coast Habitat is performed by volunteers. At present we are looking for people who have writing and graphic arts skills, new committee members for several of our committees, and people to assist with mailings. Construction for 2005 will begin in late August or early September and we would welcome anyone of any skill level to exert physical labor on it. If you are interested, you can e-mail Roy Salzman or call Mid-Coast Habitat at (207) 236-4974.
BECOME A SPONSOR: We are looking individuals and/or businesses who will sponsor the cost of an entire house or who will donate the materails necessary to build a house. We also work with persons who will become Partial sponsors. All Sponsors will receive recognition for their generosity in the local press, at the construction site and Habitat events throughout the year. Interested parties should e-mail Phil McKean or call Mid-Coast Habitat at (207) 236-4974
MAKE A DONATION: As important as our major donors are, we also benefit from many smaller individual donations. Any contribution you can afford will help us advance our mission. You can send us a check directly to:

FAMILY SELECTION....INTERESTED IN A HABITAT HOME? Mid-Coast Habitat chooses families to become homeowners on the basis of need, willingness to partner, and ability to meet income guidelines. Habitat does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, religion, country of origin, or source of income. Habitat is not for everyone. It demands hard work and a commitment to partnership with Habitat to build a home. It is a 'hand-up' program, not a 'hand-out'. It is not an emergency program for those who need to find stable housing immediately.
If you would like further information or an application to see if you meet the qualification requirements, please request one by e-mailing Peggy Collins or calling Mid-Coast Habitat at (207) 236-4974.
LAND: There is always a continuing need for land donations for lots on which we might build future homes. If you have an interest in making a donation of land or someone may want to donate land, please e-mail Oswald Street or call Mid-Coast Habitat at (207) 236-4974.
