Home

WCHFH is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.

Hammers

Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - "sweat equity" - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.

News

WCHFH's latest project, the Ridgewood Duplex, was dedicated in July.

The 2,800 square foot building will house four persons with disabilities. It was built as a cooperative program involving Winneshiek County Habitat for Humanity, Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation, the City of Decorah, Winneshiek County and numerous other groups and businesses.

For Habitat for Humanity, it was their 17th project in Winneshiek County. But it was a unique project in many ways, including being the first duplex built and the first project with some construction during the winter.

The duplex consists of two identical two bedroom units.

The residents will receive 24-hour-a-day staffing of the duplex from Mosaic, Inc. of Waukon. The help the Mosaic staffers will give with laundry, cooking and many other household and life skills will enable the persons with disabilities to enjoy "supported community living."

The new duplex is located between the Keystone A-E-A office and the Meehan, Schwartz optometrist offices off Montgomery Street.
