A Bus Driver’s Holiday -- Habitat for Humanity Int'l 1

A Bus Driver’s Holiday

Bus drivers from Belfast enjoy building with homeowners in South Africa.

“I suppose the thing that strikes you most when you arrive in a South African township is the sheer poverty; houses made from cardboard, no running water or electricity. But yet the people are so friendly,” said Citybus driver Paul McKenna.

Paul led a team of 18 Belfast bus drivers out to South Africa to build homes with Habitat for Humanity for the third time in a row. As well as fundraising for the cost of their trip and a donation to the charity, the team raised enough money to help educate 70 to 100 children. Translink gave full support to their drivers by giving them special leave, and donating a further £1,000 to the project.

“Naturally when we get back we can’t wait to go again and bring more helpers out there with us,” says Paul. He says the team is looking forward to returning to Khayleitsha township next year.

Damian Bannon Translink’s Citybus Falls Manager comms, “We are really proud of our drivers willing to give their time and effort for a good cause. This really is a case of ordinary people making an extraordinary difference.”
