Children play soccer in a village outside Yerevan, the capital of the Caucasus country Armenia, where substandard housing is still rampant after the collapse of the Soviet Union and a devastating 1988 earthquake.

European football fans at EUFA EURO 2008 know the importance of goals, and at fan zones in Austria they’ll also learn about Habitat for Humanity’s goal: Simple, decent, affordable housing for families who have none. An estimated 5 million people will watch nearly 3,000 brief commercial spots about Habitat for Humanity running on 15 giant screens packed with as many as 70,000 people at a time during the June 7-29 tournament.
The 15-second spots urge football fans to get involved in the fight against inadequate shelter by directing them to Habitat for Humanity’s Web site for Europe and Central Asia, where they can learn about volunteering opportunities, donating money and discover other ways to help end poverty housing. The fan zones, designated squares where tens of thousands of fans watch live game feeds on screens as large as 84 square meters, are located in the Austrian cities of Vienna (nine screens), Salzburg (three screens), Klagenfurt (two screens) and Innsbruck (one screen).
