International Nelson Mandela Day is a call to action for people everywhere to take responsibility for changing the world into a better place, one small step at a time, just as Mr. Mandela did for more than 67 years.

In a joint partnership initiative with SABC and the Nelson Mandela Foundation the week of the 16 – 20 July, 2012 will see hundreds of South Africans responding to Habitat for Humanity’s call to join them in their quest to reach their target of 67 houses during their International Nelson Mandela Build Week.

The houses are being built across South Africa in Orange Farm (Gauteng), Mfuleni (Western Cape) and Umgababa (KZN) in honor and to commemorate International Nelson Mandela Day on the July 18. Under the guidance of qualified artisans volunteers will be lending their hand in mixing cement, passing building blocks, erecting walls, trusses and the laying of roof tiles.

As part of the partnership initiative the SABC staff and their senior executive team will be out on site building three of the houses in Orange Farm (Gauteng) and will also be supplying extensive media coverage during the week of the event.

On the final day of the build, July 20, all of the houses around the country will be handed over to the beneficiaries. Key speakers at the ceremony in Orange Farm in Gauteng will be Mr Achmat Dangor, Chief Executive of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, and a member from the SABC’s Executive team.
