Thanks from Armenia
Habitat is grateful to all its supporters who answered the December appeal and made donations for families in Armenia so that next year more couples in Spitak can have a warm and cozy home for Christmas and the New Year.
This year, the Karapetyan family for the first time celebrated the holidays in a renovated home. “This New Year was quite different from all the others. We were very happy to welcome guests and enjoy the holidays in the warmth and comfort of our home,” says Artak Karapetyan.
His little daughter Lily, 6, drew a picture that reflected the elevated mood of the family. “We were so inspired to meet the New Year in the warm atmosphere of our renovated home. I couldn’t believe that it was all a reality. It was as if we were in a world of dreams where everything is brighter and colorful. Let all the needy families in the world experience the blessing of owning a decent home in which to live,” says Artak’s wife, Siranush.
The money that Habitat received in response to the December appeal will go to support the project in Spitak. By the end of the year, Habitat will talk more about the families who benefit from this support.
In 1988, the city of Spitak experienced a devastating earthquake that demolished 17 percent of the housing stock and left thousands of people homeless. More than 22 years after the tragedy, many Armenian families still live in old metal cars, the so called ‘domiks’, that serve as temporary shelter. These constructions get very hot in summer and too cold in winter, making the life of the residents almost unbearable. Habitat provides cost effective solutions to help affected families obtain simple, decent and affordable homes. In 2011, Habitat Armenia will support 15 more families. If enough resources can be raised, by the end of June 2015 it can help up to 300 families in Spitak.
