Poland opens new build season with work in Jozefoslaw -- Habitat for Humanity Int'l 1
March 31, 2009Poland opens new build season with work in Jozefoslaw
On March 21st, a group of 30 volunteers launched a new build season on the site in Jozefoslaw. The work on the house for six families started last year, this year the building will be finished and soon future homeowners will be able to move into their new simple, decent house.
Families in need were investing “sweat equity” into the new homes alongside volunteers from the American School of Warsaw, representatives of AIG/Lincoln and members of the local community. They cleaned the site from wood logs and rubbles and installed ceiling profiles for plaster boards. At the end of the hard working day, families and volunteers shared lunch prepared for the occasion by students of the American School of Warsaw.
The family of Ewa Chmielecka is one of the future homeowners. Currently, Ewa lives with her husband and two daughters, 6 and 17, in the town of Kobylka. They occupy a 28 square meter annex, without heating, bathroom or toilet. Ewa works as a nurse at the Institute of Rheumatology in Warsaw, her husband is an electrician. However, the earnings are not enough to buy a new house or a flat. Banks do not consider them creditworthy, thus they cannot take out a mortgage. Thanks to Habitat for Humanity, the family will soon be moving into a simple, decent and affordable home.
Throughout the season, work on the build site in Jozefoslaw will be taking place every Saturday.
