Domestic Disaster Policy
In response to recent U.S. disasters, Habitat advocated to reform the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act. Habitat also supported the creation of a National Commission on Children and Disasters.
Habitat supports reforming the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act so that it improves disaster-related housing by implementing more permanent affordable housing solutions post-disaster.
In September, 2011 Sen. Mary Landrieu and Sen. Thad Cochran introduced legislation that would reform the Stafford Act.
National Commission on Children and Disasters
Habitat supported the creation of the National Commission on Children and Disasters when it was established in 2007. The purpose of the commission was to improve the gaps in preparedness, response and recovery policies that specifically address the needs of children.
The commission delivered a comprehensive report to President Obama and Congress in 2010 before it terminated in April, 2011.
