Joey and Kristen Maddox struggled to find a place to live after Katrina. The same apartments that were $450 before the storm are $800, with no changes, no renovations. The family of six will move into their Habitat house in December 2007.

Volunteers are at the heart of Habitat for Humanity’s Gulf Coast recovery program. Since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the region in August and September of 2005 tens of thousands of people have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and nearly 1,300 houses have been built or are under construction. Habitat for Humanity’s Gulf recovery effort brings together individuals and groups from faith institutions, corporations, and educational and community organizations to help build decent homes.
