Thrivent Financial for Lutherans announced a commitment of more than $24 million to be awarded to Habitat for Humanity affiliates for the construction of 314 homes in 37 states and the District of Columbia in 2009. This is the culmination of a four-year, $125 million alliance that has helped Habitat for Humanity increase its annual house production by 6 percent in the United States. An additional $1.7 million commitment was made to Gulfport, Mississippi, to construct 28 homes where rebuilding efforts are still essential following Hurricane Katrina.
Locations for the grant projects were chosen based on existence of Thrivent volunteer chapters, Lutheran population and the Habitat affiliate’s ability to build more homes.
The official announcement of the 2009 grants was given during a December 5 celebration at a construction site in Long Beach, Mississippi. Habitat for Humanity and Thrivent Financial officials unveiled a new street sign to commemorate the construction of 40 new homes built in the area with the $2.5 million donation made by Thrivent Builds to the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 2008.
