About United States

An estimated 5.4 million American households face worst-case housing needs, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Receiving little or no government housing assistance, these families are unable to find a decent place to live at a price they can afford to pay.

More than 1,600 Habitat for Humanity affiliates are at work in the United States, building houses in partnership with people in need of decent, affordable housing. Habitat for Humanity has helped change the lives of more than 30,000 American families since its first U.S. affiliate was founded in San Antonio, Texas, in 1978.

Team leader
The team leader for this trip is Liesje Sandler. This will be Liesje’s fifth Global Village trip. She has traveled Nicaragua, Lesotho and Honduras with Habitat, and last year, she led her first team on a fantastic trip to Paraguay. She is just wrapping up graduate school in Washington, D.C. and works full-time for a nonprofit organization focused on democracy promotion. Liesje is very committed to the mission of Habitat for Humanity, and she is thrilled to be heading to Hawaii in September. She loves traveling, dancing and listening to all kinds of music, and she is hoping to eat her weight in pineapple while the team is in Kauai!
