Northland, New Zealand
Do you want to help create affordable housing in New Zealand and make a difference in the lives of a family in the Northland Region? This team has spaces for up to 12 teammates. The team leader is seeking flexible, positive and hard-working individuals. A wonderful sense of humor is a must.
We will spend nine days (February 28 – March 14, 2010) building with the Northland Habitat affiliate on this unique and rewarding trip. No construction experience is required. Supervisors will be on site to train volunteers for specific projects each day.
About New Zealand
New Zealand is located in Oceania, islands in the South Pacific Ocean, southeast of Australia. It is a country of rare seismic beauty, from its mountain glaciers and fast-flowing rivers to deep, clear lakes and hissing geysers. Its islands offer abundant forest reserves, deserted beaches that stretch for miles and a variety of unique wildlife, such as the kiwi bird.
Not everyone is able to enjoy the country’s beauty, however. As New Zealand land prices and the cost of daily living continue to increase at a great rate, the dream of homeownership is sadly one that fewer and fewer New Zealand families are achieving. A 2008 study by Demographia International found that New Zealand has some of the least affordable housing in the developed world, and it is estimated that 29 percent of households that rent in New Zealand suffer from housing-related stress. The high cost of housing keeps families in a cycle of poverty, as little money is left for food, clothing, healthcare, education, or income generation.
About Habitat for Humanity New Zealand
To combat these problems, HFH New Zealand began working with families in 1993. The first New Zealand house was built by our Franklin affiliate (now part of the Greater Auckland affiliate) in Pukekohe in 1993. Today, Habitat for Humanity has 12 affiliate offices throughout New Zealand, and has helped give more than 300 families a hand up into their own home.
Recently, HFH New Zealand initiated a housing project in partnership with a local Maori tribe and the New Zealand government. The Maori tribe provides land, and Habitat and the government share in providing the funds to build houses. HFH New Zealand has a “house-for-a-house” tithe policy where, for every house built in the country, a similar amount is sent to a developing country.
Our team will be building in the Northland region, the northernmost region of New Zealand – located just above Auckland. Northland has a population of about 150,000, of which about 30 percent are indigenous Maori. Whangarei, with an urban population of over 50,000, is the only city in the region. Types of construction for volunteers
Volunteers may work on a variety of construction tasks to support HFH New Zealand’s building efforts with partner families. Northland, particularly in its rural areas, is regarded as one of the areas of New Zealand with the greatest need of improved housing, especially among its Maori people.
Feb. 26, Friday: Depart home airport.
Feb. 28, Sunday: Team arrives in New Zealand. Final destination will be the Whangarei Airport. Orientation that night.
March 1-6, Monday-Saturday: Build at the site.
March 7, Sunday: Local cultural activities.
March 8-10, Monday-Wednesday: Build at the site.
March 11-13, Thursday-Saturday: Visit the Bay of Islands.
March 14, Sunday: Fly out of Whangarei Airport for the trip back to homeland.
Team members should expect to stay at a local motel with team members sharing double- or triple-occupancy rooms. Breakfast is usually provided at motel and lunch is taken on the work site. Dinner is taken at various restaurants or planned with the local community.
Trip cost includes: donation to the Habitat host program and HFHI; meals; accommodations; transport (excluding trip participant airfare); medical emergency evacuation and trip cancellation insurance; some local cultural activities and team coordination and orientation materials. The team leader’s trip cost and estimated airfare may be included in the trip budget. The trip cost does not include trip participant airfare, R&R activities or visa and exit fees (not applicable for all destinations).
Hugh Robinson is a seven-year experienced leader of adult/youth mission trips to American Indian reservations. He has also participated on Global Village teams to Costa Rica, Argentina and Tucson, Arizona. This will be his third New Zealand leadership role for Global Village. Hugh is always enthusiastic about leading a team to majestic New Zealand.
