South Africa

Trip highlights

• Build housing with a holistic community-development project

• South African development professional will lead this trip and provide an insider’s view

• Connect with Nelson Mandela’s legacy in Cape Town

Help develop a community from the ground up in Cape Town. Volunteers will work alongside construction professionals to build houses for people who are moving out of informal settlements.

The result will be more than houses; it will be livable communities. Habitat for Humanity’s goals for this multi-year project are to build job skills, spur small-business development and reduce crime. You’ll meet neighbors in the community where you build as well as families who are gaining stability and potential from Habitat projects.

While you’re in Cape Town, we’ll help you understand South Africa’s unique economic and racial history. Visit Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned before becoming president of South Africa. You’ll also tour the city to  see where families live before they move to safe, decent housing.

This team offers a special opportunity: In Cape Town your team leader will be Gavin Seidler, a South African development professional. He will give you insider knowledge about how organizations work alongside Habitat for Humanity to make South Africa a better place to live.

Global Village sends volunteers to build with Habitat for Humanity projects across the world. Get your hands dirty on the worksite, meet families whose housing situation you are improving, experience the country like an insider and do it all alongside a team of like-minded volunteers. No experience required! This build is your next step with Habitat to improving lives in South Africa.

Program cost

This cost includes an important donation to Habitat for Humanity, and it covers your accommodations, meals, in-country transportation and travel medical insurance. Read details.

You may fundraise the program cost, pay it yourself, or pay some and fundraise the rest. With our help, fundraising with social media and email will be easy. Set a goal above program cost, and that additional donation will keep Habitat building after your team returns home. Joining this team can be your first step in making South Africa a better place to live.
