Credit Basics III
Stay on Track

Order your free credit reports at least once per year and read them all. Don’t hesitate to ask a mentor, friend, or your Habitat advisor for help reading your report.
Know what to look for in each section of your credit report.
Be prepared to dispute errors, and to take good notes during the dispute process.
Know the difference between “hard” and “soft” credit inquiries and which one is more important.
Two to six months before you need credit, look for a job or an apartment, connect to a utility, or shop for insurance, read your credit report. You may be able to fix errors to improve your credit before someone needs to read to your credit report. If your credit report is in bad shape, be prepared to talk about this with whoever will be looking at your credit report. You may be able to work something out ahead of time. Being upfront about a bad situation may get you ahead.
