In the Pink

Five year-old Acacia Johnson carefully sweeps the floor of her bedroom, in her family’s new Habitat house. Casey, as her mother Maryann and 3-year-old sister Amaya call her, currently lives in a small run-down home in Fairbanks, Alaska. The Greater Fairbanks Area Habitat for Humanity completed its first home in March 2000. Since then, the affiliate has built seven more, and three are currently under construction.

Casey and her family look forward to the three-bedroom Habitat home that will keep them warm during the long Alaskan winters. The Johnson girls have already found a way to combat the darkness of winter in the 49th state — by painting their bedrooms pink and purple.
