Youth Involvement Intensifies

This year, Habitat for Humanity International's Campus Chapters and Youth Programs department celebrates 15 years of youth involvement. Its growth is evidenced by the popularity of CCYP's Collegiate Challenge, an alternative break opportunity for high school and college students across the United States and Canada.

"It's the largest alternative break in the country," says Steve Messinetti, CCYP director. "With so many different groups involved, including fraternities and sororities, campus service clubs and church groups, it goes way beyond just campus chapters."

Although the biggest numbers for Collegiate Challenge come during weeks when students leave for spring break--typically February through April--the program is open year-round.

"Students make a real impact on the communities and families they encounter," says Amy Davies, Collegiate Challenge manager. "With the positive work they do, they break down a lot of stereotypes of college students--especially college students on spring break."

Although Collegiate Challenge participants come from almost every corner of North America, all register through Habitat for Humanity International and become part of a process that matches their group with participating host affiliates throughout the country.

As of Feb. 20, more than 10,500 students had signed on to travel to one of 200 host affiliates. They will contribute a collective $1 million to support affiliates' efforts. Representing 48 states and four Canadian provinces, these young people comprise more than 660 teams, 348 of which are campus chapters groups.

Messinetti says that many of those involved with Collegiate Challenge today become Habitat leaders tomorrow, bringing to the table enthusiasm, compassion and a commitment to help house those in need.
