Habitat for Humanity founder and president Millard Fuller emphasizes Habitat's "open door" philosophy as he speaks around the world.
A Circle of Love

"He drew a circle that shut me out, Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout. But love and I had a wit to win, We drew a circle that took him in."
--Edwin Markham

Habitat for Humanity has always been a Christian ministry, openly and unashamedly. But, it is not exclusionary. We fully recognize that many people who are not professing Christians are loving, caring, generous and compassionate folk who want to join this movement of God's love in action. They want to be a part of this growing effort to help ensure that all families have, as a minimum, a simple, decent place to live. Such people are welcomed and appreciated in Habitat's work of building and renovating houses so families in need will have a good home.

On the giving side of the Habitat "equation," there are people donating money and materials, as well as their time and talents, out of a motivation and desire to put their Christian faith into action. Others contribute in numerous ways out of other motivations. All are welcome.

On the receiving side of the Habitat "equation," many Habitat homeowners are dedicated Christians, while others are of other faith persuasions or are of no religious belief. We believe all are loved by God. All should be loved and appreciated by this open-handed and open-circle ministry which leaves no one out. God's love is universal. No one is outside His circle of love.

Jesus, the paramount motivator and inspiration for this ministry, reminds us that all are loved by our heavenly Father, including prostitutes, tax collectors and even enemies. The circle of Jesus' love is inclusive and no one is left outside.

That characteristic of Habitat's work is an essential aspect of "the theology of the hammer," which demonstrates that true religion must be more than singing and talking. There must be an action component. And, that theology embraces Protestants, Catholics, liberals, conservatives, republicans, democrats and, indeed, anyone else who is a person of compassion and goodwill who wants to make a contribution.

Join the circle if you haven't already done so. There is definitely room for you--you are needed, and will be accepted, loved and appreciated. Together, with God's help and guidance, we will change the world--one house, one family at a time.
