Habitat experiences success and addresses enormous need in Brazil, Bolivia and Chile
From the crowded urban favelas of Brazil to the rolling hills of rural southern Chile, Habitat for Humanity is busy with the work of building houses and building communities. There can be no cookie-cutter approach to addressing the housing needs of any region, much less one as complex and varied as the Latin American and Caribbean area.
“Habitat for Humanity has done miraculous things over these past three decades,” says Torre Nelson, Habitat for Humanity International’s area vice president for Latin America and the Caribbean. “But we can’t become complacent; we need to continue working with families further and further down the income scale. That’s where our principal challenge lies.”
In the photographs and features that follow, Habitat World showcases that challenge and highlights Habitat’s progress and promise in three South American countries: Brazil, Bolivia and Chile.
The difficulties these countries face and the housing solutions that Habitat pursues are as diverse as these destinations and their vibrant cultures. What remains constant is the dream of decent housing for low-income families and Habitat’s dedication to helping them achieve it in larger numbers.
