Carter Work Project volunteers in Cambodia will help build safe, decent and affordable homes with 21 families who are relocating from an unsanitary dump site in Damnak Thom village, on the eastern outskirts of Phnom Penh.

The families pay US$40 a month to live in the dump site, sharing toilets and relying on unsafe water. The new homes will be built in the northwestern border of the capital, in Srok Por village, Punhea Leu district, Kandal province.

Habitat Cambodia is providing microfinance loans and other help to build the homes, along with a clinic and community center. The homeowners will be able to harvest rain water for washing and drinking. Habitat Cambodia also will provide support to partner family members to find work in a nearby garment factory, in home- or tourist-related small businesses, or in gardening and fishing.

Habitat Cambodia has been serving families since January 2004.
