China

Habitat currently works in rural areas of southwestern China where homes are oft en makeshift , unsafe structures. Electricity is widely available, but water comes from communal wells and sanitation facilities are rare.

A typical Habitat home measures about 70 square meters and is constructed of red bricks, stone and compressed earth blocks or wood, topped by a tiled roof. Homeowners prefer a flat roof so they can use the space both for drying grain and collecting rain water.

Carter Work Project volunteers will help build 20 homes in the city of Kunming, capital of Yunnan province.

Habitat China has been serving families since 2002.
