Building Affordable Houses Creates Priceless Relationships (continued) Contagious Enthusiasm Abigail Hancock was "on the lookout for new challenges" when she learned of an opportunity to spend two months in Armenia developing ways to improve youth involvement in Habitat for Humanity's work there. From formal presentations to impromptu conversations, she spread the word about Habitat's work while collecting memories of her adventure. "I did presentations at schools, churches ... and more. However, it was probably the informal chats that achieved the biggest successes; I was never off duty from HFH and always had our leaflets in my handbag! Plus it was amazing to see the networks between people; one visit always led to another so I kept myself busy. I like to think that a lot more people know about the good work of HFH as a result of my visit. "...My best memory has to be the first house blessing in Sipanik. ... This was not only a house dedication but also the christening of the homeowner and children. It was a huge party and there were people from three villages. Tables were set out with lots of food, there were toasts and dancing, it was a real Armenian event! The ceremony was simple but filled with emotion; this is the time when you really understand the meaning of a decent home and the value of Habitat for Humanity." Grateful Giving The frequent victim of hurricanes, earthquakes and other calamities, Guatemala has seen its share of natural disasters. Thus, when tornadoes struck various locations in the United States last year, HFH Guatemala staff members knew how much work it would take to put lives--and homes--back together. They also knew that a little help could go a long way to lift the spirits of people dealing with tragedy and loss. In January 2004, HFH Guatemala presented a tithe check to Wiregrass (Dothan, Ala.) HFH for $45,000, enough to build a whole house in Dothan. With the check came a letter and heartfelt wishes: "Our practice over the last several years has been to identify areas in the world that have experienced natural disasters and to send our funds there....We are thrilled to be partnering with the Wiregrass affiliate, and are equally thankful to all the corporations and individuals in Guatemala that have made this possible.... We know from talking with many of the families in Guatemala that their Habitat home represents more than just a place to live. It is hope, it is God's love in action, it is solidarity with more than 150,000 other families, and untold volunteers, staff and donors. ... As we say in Guatemala, 'Que Dios les bendiga' (God bless you)." |
