Substandard living conditions impose a constant hardship on poor families everywhere. Winter winds blast through cracks in the walls. Disease-carrying insects nest in thatch roofing, while rodents scurry about undeterred. Rain-soaked bedding yields another sleepless night. Insecure tenure begets fear and instability. A solid and safe place to live, however, provides hope. It offers warmth in the winter, dryness in the rainy season, structural stability, physical comfort and emotional reassurance. The following pages feature photographs of houses from the five areas of the world where Habitat for Humanity is working, and they illustrate substandard and Habitat housing conditions. Better housing does make a difference, and in 89 nations around the globe, Habitat for Humanity is there to help.

Poverty’s Harsh Reality Living on the world’s poorest continent, the people of Africa face a range of problems connected to poverty, including AIDS, malnutrition, political and civil instability and substandard housing. Nearly half the region’s population lives in extreme poverty. Whether in rural Africa or the continent’s urban centers, poor families struggle to meet basic housing needs, including an adequate place to live. • Insufficient doors potentially compromise the family’s security, and that of any possessions they may own. • The absence of a permanent or raised floor causes vulnerability to the elements, resulting in malaria or bites from snakes and rats. • Unstable walls, which are further weakened by erosion, harbor insects and are at risk of collapse. |
