Costa Rica — Institution Development and Disaster Risk Management Assistant

Title: Institution Development and Disaster Risk Management assistant

Assignment summary

The position will work closely with the disaster unit and coordinators in the design and implementation of projects to be implemented in the Caribbean region. Work will be done in the various languages of the region—Spanish, French, English and Dutch. The volunteer will be based in Costa Rica; however, if the volunteer is from Miami, he or she can work from there.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support and supervision to projects implemented in the Caribbean region.
  • Offer support in the development of manuals, curricula and materials for disaster risk reduction for community distribution.
  • Document organizational learning as it relates to various experiences.
  • Translate disaster risk reduction documents from English to Spanish.
  • Participate in training events.
  • Be willing to work under stressful disaster situations.


Requirements

  • English and Spanish fluency, both written and oral.
  • Degree in engineering, disaster management or related field.
  • Strong verbal communication and project writing skills.
  • Project management experience and skills.
  • Excellent people skills.
  • Ability to solve problems and think creatively.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft programs (i.e., Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Internet.
  • Experience working in multicultural environments is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in training and construction.

Support from the host organization
The HFHI Latin America Caribbean office will have a work station for the volunteer. Work-related transportation costs will be covered and office-related hardware, including a computer, will be supplied. Travel, accommodation and meal costs for overseas, work-related travel will be paid for. A monthly allowance of $500 will be provided.

Volunteer budget

Other than the volunteer support noted above, the volunteer will be responsible for all costs associated with living in the host country.

Assignment location information

The volunteer will work in the city of San Jose and can live in any of the nearby provinces, such as San Jose, Heredia, Alajuela, etc. The city of San Jose is modern, with all types of communication (i.e., telephone, Internet, cell phones, etc.) and various tourist activities and diversions. Casual dress is appropriate.
