Chile — Volunteer Mobilization Assistant

Assignment summary

Community mobilization is key to Habitat for Humanity Chile’s work. This assignment is a good fit for someone who enjoys working outdoors and visiting rural areas. The volunteer will be serving in the national office located in downtown Santiago. The role of the national office is to provide administration and support for construction projects located south of the city center.

Responsibilities

The volunteer will assist with the organization, implementation and logistics of international construction work teams.

  • Travel independently.
  • Act as problem solver for teams and national office.
  • Pick up teams at the airport and escort to hotel.
  • Accompany teams to the construction site and serve as an interpreter when necessary.
  • Help to identify local individuals and organize them into teams.
  • Provide orientation for new and potential volunteers.


Requirements

We are looking for someone who takes responsibility, has initiative and is motivated, dedicated and proactive. Requirements include:

  • Spanish and English fluency, both written and oral.
  • Experience in public relations, tourism or hospitality, marketing, advertising, translation and interpretation, communications, education, recruiting and interacting with groups.
  • Flexibility.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office programs (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint).


Preferred skills and experiences formatting fix

  • Two to four years of university education.
  • Construction site experience.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Creativity.
  • Experience working in multicultural environments.


Support from the host organization

Due to limited access to computers in the national office, the volunteer is encouraged to bring a personal laptop. Volunteers will be responsible for the purchase of a Chilean cell phone or SIM card. Office-related transportation (e.g., bus, metro, train) will be provided. Shared housing for volunteers may be available; volunteers chooising to locate their own housing will be responsible for all costs.

*A volunteer staying more than three months may apply for a visa of temporary residency or leave the country every 90 days to renew his or her tourist visa. Volunteers interested in acquiring a visa must contact the nearest Chilean consulate for specific information regarding visas, type required, length of stay and how an extension is granted.
