Nepal — Microfinance Specialist
Title: Microfinance specialist
Location: Habitat for Humanity Nepal National Office, Kathmandu, Nepal
Term of Service: 12 months (beginning as soon as possible)
Assignment summary
Reporting to the national director, the volunteer in this position will manage the microfinance program in Nepal. The volunteer is responsible for the implementation of a comprehensive strategy for microfinance, which will enable the Habitat housing program to serve more families.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop microfinance methodologies and procedures suitable for the local context and community loans or village bank methodology.
- Provide technical guidance regarding implementation of microfinance activities and guidance in credit risk analysis.
- Identify saving and credit groups for promotion of loan portfolio.
- Strengthen microfinance institutions serving the poor, especially those focused on women and excluded groups.
- Prepare timely reports on the status of credit groups’ loans, savings and other relevant activities.
- Maintain filing system for the disbursement and repayment record of each individual client.
- Assist groups in strengthening their internal control system to ensure repayments.
Requirements
Previous experience and skills in microfinance; English fluency, both written and oral; strong verbal communication skills; excellent people skills; ability to problem-solve and think creatively, proficiency with Microsoft programs (e.g., Outlook, Excel, Word) and Internet usage; university degree related to the microfinance field. Experience working in multicultural environments is strongly preferred.
Support from the host organization
Work-related transportation costs will be covered, and office-related supplies, including a laptop, will be provided.
Volunteer budget
The volunteer will be responsible for all other costs associated with living in the host country.

Assignment location information
The population of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, is around 1 million. All amenities and facilities are available, but with some restrictions. For example, there is power interruption for about 45 hours per week. Major shopping complexes for clothing, food and electrical items are available throughout the city capital.
The office has limited Internet access, but there is Internet availability in major hotels. Hotel accommodation ranging from US$10 to $100 per night is available. Casual dress is acceptable at the office.
