International Volunteer Program spotlights
Since its inception, Habitat for Humanity has relied on the commitment, spirit and expertise of volunteers to fuel our mission. Very often, our International Volunteers tell us that they received far more than they gave during their international volunteer experience. Here are some of their stories.
Sheila Marie, Ireland and Hungary-Szarvas, 2006-2008
“Working [as an international volunteer] was amazing both in the giving and in the receiving. To live months in a country and culture other than my own, to give the best of my heart and hands, to represent my own country in the context of faith, hope, peace and love is both privilege and blessing.” Read more about Sheila's experience.

Dustin Dresser, Costa Rica, 2008-2009
“I can honestly say there is no other place that I’d rather be than where I am right now. I am grateful to have been able to have this opportunity and I’m making the most of it. I get the most satisfaction out of volunteering—not just because I’m donating my time to help others but rather because I learn so much from the people I help.” Read more about Dustin's experience.
Michael Rabb, Nepal, 2008–2009
“Thanks so much for a great volunteer assignment. The Habitat for Humanity Nepal staff are great people, and I really appreciated the opportunity to volunteer there. I am sure that sometime in the future, I’ll be back!” Read more about Michael's experience.
Shelly Koo, Africa and the Middle East, 2009
“While I have only been here for about three months, I can without a doubt say that one of the biggest blessings has been the opportunity and privilege of working alongside so many passionate and diverse staff.” Read more about Shelly’s experience.
Megan Sargeant, Bangladesh, 2009
“I find myself awed by working alongside such amazing staff and community members. The position at Habitat for Humanity Bangladesh has enabled me to get a view into the life and perspective of low-income Bangladeshis that I could have never achieved otherwise. While Bangladesh can be a challenging country, it has been an experience that is heartbreakingly beautiful, at times, and one that few foreigners get the chance to see.” Read more about Megan's experience.
