Carters Swing Hammers In Their Hometown

After swinging hammers in New York and Jacksonville, Fla., earlier this week, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn came home to Plains on Thursday, joining the crew of House #34 in Habitat's Milestone Estates neighborhood. House construction concluded Friday with a dedication ceremony.

At a press conference on Thursday, Carter spoke of his ongoing partnership with Habitat for Humanity, saying, "Human rights means not only being free from persecution... it also involves the most basic of human needs -- food, clothing and shelter."

The week has seen an unprecedented level of Habitat building around the globe. With both the Jimmy Carter Work Project and Habitat's annual Building On Faith event being celebrated, construction has been underway on some 10,000 houses worldwide.

"This is the most incredible week in Habitat's history, not only because of the activity here, but all over the world, affiliates in 68 countries are building houses with us," said Fuller.

Five of those houses are now complete in Plains, with another 30 JCWP houses finished in Americus, Ga. Tonight, the two Sumter County communities will come together for a celebration event as the Sumter County Initiative declares victory over substandard housing -- now decent, affordable housing is available to every family in the county.
