Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter spoke at a press conference in Anniston, Ala., on Tuesday, Feb. 11, sharing details of the upcoming 2003 Jimmy Carter Work Project in Anniston and LaGrange and Valdosta, Ga., as well as memories of previous JCWPs around the world.
"This year, we're coming back home, basically," said Carter, who lives in Plains, Ga. He explained the significance of this year's three JCWP sites, each cities that have committed to ridding their neighborhoods of substandard housing through the 21st Century Challenge.
Reminiscing about previous JCWPs, Carter recalled the first build in 1984 in New York City; less than 50 volunteers participated in renovating an old apartment building. He contrasted that experience with the 1999 Jimmy Carter Work Project in the Philippines. With more than 13,000 volunteers constructing 293 houses, it is the largest work project in the event's 20-year history.
Carter called volunteering with Habitat for Humanity a privilege and emphasized the transformation that volunteers' efforts can have on individual families as well as entire communities.
