Homeowner Stories
"A great experience" Homeowner lends a hand as building begins By Rebekah Daniel When homeowner Kathy Cartwright heard who was doing the electrical work on her Habitat house, she devised a plan to arrange for her father, a local electrician with one of the companies recruited to wire the JCWP houses, to wire her house. It worked. "I'm glad my daddy's here," she says. "That means a lot to me. It's exciting to have someone from my family here." It will be exciting for her own family--7-year-old twins, Chaz and Charity--to move in as well. They have already begun discussing what they will do first in their new house. The simple things, such as eating together at the table and taking a bath in a brand-new tub, hold tremendous appeal. Inviting friends over is on the "to-do" list as well. Cartwright--like many of the JCWP homeowners in LaGrange--can recall the exact date she was notified of her potential homeownership: Dec. 2, 2002. Since that time, months of sweat equity have served to set the stage for this week's work. Even though she hasn't done construction work before, Cartwright was on site Saturday to lend a hand however possible. "It's a great experience to see all the people doing this," she says. "If it weren't for them, I'd be sitting in my trailer. I pray to God every night to say 'thank you.' "
