JCWP build brings Minnesota, California women to Alabama

Mary Rossman of Rochester, Minn., and her sister, Ann Herman of Cottonwood, Calif., have always wanted to participate in a Jimmy Carter Work Project, but the timing and their schedules had never worked out. This year, though, everything came together.

“We decided that before any more time escaped us, we would do it,” says Ann, “so we wouldn’t have to say, ‘Gee, I wish I would have done that.’”

Both sisters volunteered on a disaster recovery build in Honduras in 1996 through their church, and Mary has volunteered in the past with the local affiliate in Rochester, but they’ve never seen houses go up in just a week.

“Everyone is friendly; everyone works hard,” says Ann. Both Ann and Mary have worked in support services this week, carrying water, ice and snacks around the site to all 35 houses. They’ve been thrilled to meet so many volunteers and homeowners.

“I think it’s wonderful, I think it’s just great,” says Mary of Habitat for Humanity and the JCWP. Like the other dedicated volunteers in all capacities, Mary and Ann are wonderful, too.
