Volunteer appreciates 'once-in-a-lifetime' opportunity to build

Hattie Matthews, from Detroit, is proud to be a part of the 2005 JCWP—especially since it’s going on in her own backyard. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” she says. “To affect this kind of change within a community—I wouldn’t miss it.

“I think Detroit is in need of projects such as this one,” she continues. “It will be a huge benefit to the city.”

A veteran of two Women Builds, Hattie would encourage anyone to join in Habitat’s house-building work: “There’s something for everyone to do,” she says, “even people who don’t have construction experience.”

As many other experienced Habitat volunteers can attest, working alongside the family partners is a unique experience and one that encourages excellence. “It’s definitely hard work, but it’s the most rewarding work you’ll ever do,” she says. “It motivates you to do your best.”
