AmeriCorps members join volunteers, homeowners on siteAmeriCorps members have played an important role in this year’s Jimmy Carter Work Project. The AmeriCorps program involves volunteers in long-term service projects in the areas of education, public safety, health and the environment.
Nelsuanyi Ferreira, from Lawrence, Mass., has taught English as a second language at an elementary school in addition to other projects. This is her first Habitat build and she is having a great time: “I love it,” she says. “It’s so much fun that we have been staying late to help out.” Robert Bell of Fairbanks, Alaska, is a member of the AmeriCorps Tribal Civilian Community Corps. Robert says that working side by side with the homeowners and other volunteers has been a life-changing experience for him. “I like the opportunity to help others, see new places and meet new people,” he says. “Even though it looks hard, it’s not, because you’re working as a group.”
