House leader Tom Chap (right) helped to build Than Dao Van’s family’s new Habitat house. On the last day of a week-long build, homeowners performed at a traditional tea ceremony to thank the volunteers for all their hard work during the 2009 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project.

Overview
While Vietnam has the second fastest-growing economy in Asia, it is still one of the poorest countries in the region. Substandard housing in Vietnam ranges from overcrowded urban units to shacks constructed from scraps or natural materials that need frequent replacing.
Carter Work Project volunteers in Vietnam helped build 40 homes in the Ke Sat fishing community southeast of the capital city of Hanoi. The new homeowners relocated from slums or cramped fishing boats on the banks of the Thai Binh River. The families served will not only benefit from new homes, but will have access to sanitation and electricity.
