Carter, 75, Sets Pace Early Tuesday Morning

MARAGONDON, Philippines (March 23, 1999) -- Minutes after dawn Tuesday, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter was already working on the house he and other volunteers are building this week in the Philippines.

At age 75, with years of experience working in the summer heat of Southwest Georgia, President Carter set a second-day work pace that was impossible to beat.

By 6:30 a.m., President Carter had a full team of volunteers around him in House No. 6 at the Maragondon build site, JCWP's largest site. To beat the tropical heat (the high Tuesday was 90 degrees), crews started almost two hours earlier than usual and postponed devotions until noon.

By mid-afternoon, hundreds of volunteers were standing on scaffolds, finishing the last layers of concrete block and mortar.

"We're pushing to finish the masonry today so we can start on the roofs tomorrow," said Rick Hathaway, JCWP '99 project coordinator. "People are working hard, we're having a lot of good fellowship, and we're getting the job done. There seems to be a positive spirit in the air."
