Habitat for Humanity and Stanley Tools in Haiti

By Wendy Strebe

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, February 2008.- Stanley Tools of Latin America has donated 1.5 tons of tools to the Habitat for Humanity’s project Building Training Center (BTC) in Haiti. This donation will support training and construction efforts, thus furthering the good work that has already taken place in a country plagued by poverty and natural disasters.

The BTC Center involves beginning and operating three BTCs in “hot spot” (especially vulnerable to conflict) cities in order to promote economic development, vocational training and improved shelter. The project is developed in partnership with CHF International, USAID, Saje Foundation and Habitat for Humanity International.

The first 13 students of the 6-month pilot course in construction training will graduate in March 2008.

Habitat for Humanity works to eradicate homelessness and substandard housing the world over. Stanley Tools designs, develops and delivers tools into the hands of construction workers. Both organizations contribute to the development of housing in the Americas and the world. By partnering together, much work is being accomplished towards helping low income families realize their dream of a better life.

Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. It is estimated that 80% of the population lives in abject poverty and for many, disease, hunger, unemployment and suffering are a way of life. These poor live in tents or dilapidated shacks made of sticks, cardboard, plastic, tin, or whatever materials can be obtained. These structures barely provide protection against the elements and children frequently fall ill from the appalling conditions.

Habitat for Humanity is building cement houses with metal roofs and cement floors, in Haiti. These houses have solid walls, roofs that do not leak, floors that do not turn to mud with the rain, glass windows and doors that lock.

Partner families benefit from training and education classes on topics such as family economics and budgeting, micro-enterprise business plans and evaluation, construction techniques and skills, crisis resolution, nutrition, health, literacy, family relations and community living.

Habitat for Humanity is grateful to be in collaboration with Stanley Tools, working to make a difference in Latin America and the Caribbean.
