ArcelorMittal builds with Habitat for Humanity in Mexico

June 19, 2011

SAN JOSÉ, Costa Rica (June 19, 2011) – The world’s largest steelmaking company, ArcelorMittal, will send a team of construction volunteers to build alongside low-income families with Habitat for Humanity Mexico this week. The ArcelorMittal team consists of five local and 12 international employees from five countries: Argentina, Brazil, United States, Spain, Morocco and Romania.

The volunteers will work on mixing mortar for the floor, laying bricks, cutting rebar to building homes and finishing interior decorations. Future homeowners will work alongside the volunteers.

Over the last three years, the ArcelorMittal Foundation has helped Habitat to support over 700 families. ArcelorMittal employees were involved in volunteering at the Habitat build sites in Latin America, Africa and Europe. In addition building and renovating, the ArcelorMittal Foundation has generously supported Habitat’s reconstruction efforts in Haiti.

“ArcelorMittal and Habitat for Humanity have been working together since 2008. The Solidarity holidays that we are organizing with Habitat is a great opportunity for our employees to spend time in a foreign country, learn about different culture, while working a s volunteer in a project to benefit our communities”, said Nathalie Rehaen, ArcelorMittal Foundation’s Project Manager Americas.

Habitat for Humanity Mexico works to make adequate housing accessible to low-income families, offering economic and social support through training, no-profit credits and technical assistance and supporting the “social production of habitat”—the process by which families resolve their housing issues one step at a time, using the resources available to them. Habitat’s support helps empower families to improve their own wellbeing and that of their communities.

One of ArcelorMittal’s most active regional offices is located in Guanajuato, Mexico, making it a popular site for international volunteer teams from the company. Since 1992, when Habitat began operations there, more than 3,000 housing solutions have been built in Guanajuato, benefiting more than 15,000 individuals.
