Volunteers “build on faith” in El Salvador
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (August 10, 2012) – As part of its twentieth anniversary celebration, Habitat for Humanity El Salvador recently hosted the event “Building on Faith 2012”.
The inauguration took place on July 30, 2012 in the San José Villanueva central park, La Libertad.
The table of honor was presided by Beatriz Bejarano, Director of Operations for Habitat for Humanity El Salvador, Pedro Alfonso Durán Ruano, Mayor of San José Villanueva, Father Mario Adín Cruz and Alba Milano, Marketing Director for the Hotel Crowne Plaza. Also present at the event were Habitat partner families and local and international volunteers, including Crowne Plaza staff that would be helping to build.
After the inauguration, a group of more than 300 volunteer got to work building 17 houses alongside Habitat partner families, masons and staff. The homes are located in San José Villanueva and Zaragoza, in the department of La Libertad.
Thanks to the support of the volunteers, and after a week of arduous work, seven of the families were able to receive the keys to their new homes, where they will begin a new phase of life in a safe, adequate house. Construction on the remaining homes was completed shortly after the event.
The close of the Building on Faith event took place on August 3, with Habitat partner families and volunteers, as well as Claudia Garcia, Resource Development manager for Habitat for Humanity El Salvador, Habitat board treasurer Pastor Miguel Romero, Rachel Bennett, leader of an International group of Habitat volunteers, and Father Adonay Chicas.
Building on Faith is Habitat for Humanity’s annual celebration of the organization’s faith partnerships, an essential part of its Christian ministry. Originally designed as a one-week event in September, Building on Faith has expanded to a season of faith partnerships that typically runs from March to September. On Sunday, Sept. 30, Building on Faith culminates on the International Day of Prayer and Action for Human Habitat.
