New Act! Speak! Build! Week materials now available

Join your fellow young people in raising your collective voice about affordable housing needs. The 2015 Act! Speak! Build! Week event will be held April 12-18. Visit Habitat.org to register now and download our latest materials. Registered groups will also receive exclusive Act! Speak! Build! Week art to use on T-shirts and during events.

ASBW is your chance to join forces with Habitat volunteers from across the United States. We encourage young people to engage elected officials and policy makers in their communities.

New lesson sets heading your way

You asked, we listened! Our team is creating a new training resource called “Leading Lessons.” We will highlight groups like yours for particular strengths such as fundraising, education, advocacy or leadership. If your group has a success story you’d like to share as a potential Leading Lesson, send us an email at [email protected].

Annual reports open next month

Don’t forget to mark your calendars — the Youth United and campus chapter annual reports will open in early April. Groups will receive more information from our team in a separate email. Have questions? Email us at [email protected] and we’ll make sure the best of the past year gets included in your report.

The Habitat Store now offers team colors

Show your school spirit and Habitat pride at once. Campus chapters can now order items from The Habitat Store in school colors. Not part of a chapter? No worries. New Habitat merchandise is now available to the public. Visit thehabitatstore.org for complete details and to shop.

Partner with Tithe and travel overseas

Your group is invited to join the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project this year in Pokhara, Nepal! This special build is taking place Nov. 1–6. This partnership is a great way for groups to participate in Habitat’s international missions. Learn more about the build experience. Have questions? Email Katie Grover with the Tithe program at [email protected].

Other ways to get involved

Answer a question, earn $2,500 for your campus chapter from Barnes & Noble College

Why Habitat? Your answer could win your group $2,500. On March 31-April 26, submit your group Instagram video explaining why Habitat for Humanity is important. On April 27, voting for the seven finalists will begin, with the top videos moving on to the judging round. Four winners will be chosen to receive $2,500 from Barnes & Noble College for Collegiate Challenge alternative break build trips. Only groups with a Barnes & Noble College bookstore on campus are eligible to enter. Visit bncollege.com/college-partners for a complete list of participating bookstores. Email [email protected] for more details.

Help women earn equal housing rights

Lack of decent housing puts women at increased risk of gender-based violence, particularly where there are shared toilet facilities or long distances to travel to collect clean water, and maternal health is often sacrificed in slum conditions, risking both mother and child. Improved access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) is critical and can literally be a matter of life or death for women and girls around the world. Use your voice to secure, decent housing a reality for every woman, man and child by signing the Women’s Day Petition at www.bit.ly/WomensDayPetition.

Show your blue: Stand up for safe drinking water worldwide

Did you know 748 million people lack safe drinking water? Join us on Friday, March 20, to celebrate World Water Day and the launch of #Blue4Water campaign. Help raise awareness about the critical need for safe drinking water and sanitation — as well as our recent victory of the passage of the Water for the World Act — by wearing blue. Participate in the campaign by wearing blue jeans, a blue tie or a blue shirt, and post it on social media with the hashtag #Blue4Water in your caption. For more information, visit WaterAid America at wateraid.org/us/blue4water.

Put books in Habitat homes

Your group can earn mini grants from Project Storybook and KEDS to put books on the shelves of Habitat homeowners’ children. This partnership is a great way to include kids who are too young for the build site in the magic of making a house a home. Email [email protected] or visit twitter.com/Books4HFHKids for complete details.
