Disaster response in Vietnam
After Typhoon Ketsana in 2009, Vo Thi Sau and her family were among the thousands of Vietnamese helped by Habitat for Humanity Vietnam’s first disaster-response project.
By the close of the three-year project, Habitat Vietnam had completed 237 home repairs, built 20 new houses and provided secure roofs for another 662 households. Also, Habitat has trained 606 people in disaster-resilient construction technology, trained members of the local community in lessening risks to lives and property in disasters, and reached out to 15,000 people with information, education and communication activities on disaster response.
Among Habitat Vietnam’s partners in disaster response: Hiep Duc Red Cross, Tien Phuoc District People’s Committee, Hiep Duc District People’s Committee, United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, ExxonMobil Vietnam, Schneider Electric and Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco.
