Habitat for Humanity Int'l -- First Ladies Build

From 1999 to 2001, current and former first ladies and women governors led women crews in building Habitat houses in each U.S. state's capital. First Ladies Cathy Keating (Oklahoma) and Janet Huckabee (Arkansas) were dedicated participants in First Ladies Build events.

Women Build promotes the involvement of women in the construction of Habitat houses. All-women crews provide an unintimidating environment in which women can contradict stereotypical roles and learn construction skills. Women Build taps into an enormous volunteer pool, increasing the number of houses Habitat can build with families in need.

Many Habitat affiliates have organized their own Women Build houses near First Ladies Build sites. Interest in women's builds has grown internationally to the Philippines, Tanzania, Northern Ireland, Portugal, New Zealand, Korea, Fiji, South Africa, Canada and Hungary.
