Botswana Habitat for Humanity Botswana celebrated the World Leaders Build on Saturday, Aug. 11, by dedicating the house designated as Botwana's 700th and the Serowe affiliate's 100th. On hand for the event were the Minister of Lands, Housing and Environment Jacob Nkate and Vincent T. Seretse, general manager of the Botswana Housing Corporation.

Uganda Grass thatched houses in Uganda have dropped from 52 percent in 1996 to 42 percent in 2000, and corrugated iron roofs increased from 48 percent to 57 percent over the same period. full story



Ghana Habitat for Humanity Ghana constructed 10 houses in Fiaso, a new affiliate where a village was destroyed recently by a brush fire. The event is being held from June through the August 11th. The World Leaders Build was officially launched with a five-day build attended by 16 volunteers from Agona Ashanti HFH (a neighboring affiliate) and Pat Smith, a volunteer from Lexington, Ky. HFH Ghana raised $1,500 for the event.

Madagascar Six houses were constructed for Madagascar's World Leaders Build and dedicated on Saturday, Aug.11. The houses were built in Alasora, a community near the capital city of Antananarivo. Madagascar's housing minister, Ramanantsoa Herivelona, attended the event launch on August 5, laying the cornerstone for the sixth house.

South Africa President Thabo Mbeki joined other dignitaries and volunteers building a Habitat house on Aug. 10. "We are happy and always ready to work in partnership with Habitat for Humanity and many of its volunteers, including Mr. Jimmy Carter, former president of the United States of America," said President Mbeki to the volunteers and special guests who gathered at the build site. full story
