University of North Carolina Chapel Hill receives Habitat youth award

ATLANTA (July 08, 2011) – Habitat for Humanity International has named the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill as its Campus Chapter of the Year. This award is presented annually to a school group that has made significant contributions to helping to make affordable housing possible in their community.

“We commend the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill campus chapter members for their commitment to help families in need of affordable housing,” said Cody Logsdon, volunteer engagement manager, Habitat for Humanity International. “Habitat’s more than 500 campus chapters play a significant role in our work to eliminate poverty housing.”

Habitat campus chapters are student-led organizations found on high school or college campuses nationwide that partner with a local Habitat affiliate to volunteer, raise funds, advocate for affordable housing and educate the local community about Habitat’s mission.

The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill was selected for engaging its community in an initiative to build a block of Habitat homes with partner families from the university and a local hospital. As this year’s award recipient, the campus chapter will receive a 4,500 grant from State Farm Insurance, the national corporate sponsor of Habitat’s youth programs. The grant can be used for a Habitat for Humanity school break volunteer trip or to aid in local affiliate homebuilding.

Since 2007, State Farm has served as the national corporate sponsor of Habitat for Humanity’s youth programs, with a sponsorship commitment of more than 1.1 million in grants each year. Additionally, State Farm offices contribute more than 500,000 annually to Habitat affiliates across the United States.

Honorable mention award recipients include Florida State University and Travis High School (Richmond, Texas), each receiving a 1,000 grant.
